Quilted Coif for Helmet and Mail Coif
Quilted coif (padded coif) is a practical soft layer worn under a helmet or a mail coif for full-contact training and fighting. It is intended to add cushioning, reduce pressure points from suspension/edges, and limit friction during long rounds.
Protection and durability. Quilting helps distribute load and keeps contact zones more comfortable at pace. The extended lower section covers the occiput and part of the neck/upper chest interface where rubbing from aventails, collars, and straps is common.
Mobility and fit. The shape is suited for compact historically styled helmets with leather suspension, mail coifs/hoods, and can also be used together with a modern safety liner as an extra layer to tighten and stabilize the fit. Front lacing provides straightforward adjustability without complex hardware.
Materials and service. The base version is made with a durable fabric shell (cotton or linen) and a single padding layer. This approach keeps the item maintainable: lacing and local seams are easier to service and repair. Additional options and modifications are discussed separately (without implying automatic made-to-measure production).
Historical basis. The geometry and appearance are oriented on historical analogs and source-based references for quilted under-helmet protection.
Tournament checks. As an under-helmet component, acceptance depends on the event rules and inspection practices (HMB, IMCF, ACL, and other formats). Verify thickness, materials, and overall system compatibility against your specific rule set.
