Basic Eastern Round Shield 70 cm for Buhurt
Eastern round shield in a practical “basic” build for buhurt training and competition use, made with reference to historical prototypes and sources (inspired by eastern convex round shields with a reinforced center).
The shield is convex, which helps manage glancing blows and keeps the face stable under impact. A central metal cone reinforces the middle and protects the area that takes frequent hits. With a 70 cm diameter, it gives usable coverage for tempo and line control without turning into a heavy sail in tight work.
The core is 8 mm plywood (two layers), with fabric facing on both sides. This construction is intended for repeated contact and is service-friendly: the facing can be re-covered, the shield repainted, and the rim replaced when worn.
The edge is protected with a 4 mm leather rim to reduce splitting and edge degradation from cuts, hooks, and constant shield-to-steel friction. The shield comes with two grip configurations for different handling approaches; if needed, one can be omitted to match your technique.
In practice, builds of this type are commonly used across full-contact formats (including buhurt and duel rule-sets). Final acceptance depends on the event’s rules and on-site marshal inspection (edge condition, safe hardware, grip security, and overall integrity).
