Scale Gorget Type 1 for full-contact buhurt
Scale gorget Type 1 is built for buhurt/full contact use: impact load, clinch work, and repeated maintenance cycles. The overlapping scale layout helps spread force and keeps the shoulder line moving.
Protection vs mobility: the gorget covers the sides and back of the neck plus the upper chest/clavicle area with a scale set. The front neck zone is left without solid plates to keep head rotation and forward tilt more natural and to reduce throat “binding” under load. If your rule set or setup requires it, additional front coverage can be added as an optional configuration.
Fit and integration: the front opening with straps supports controlled tightening over a gambeson/neck padding and speeds up donning. This format is commonly used with helmets that do not have an aventail (mail drape) and as a gap-closer under the helmet edge.
Service life: a serviceable scale build is easier to keep running—single plates and hardware can be replaced, connections retightened, and straps renewed as they wear. Regular post-fight checks help prevent loosened fasteners and strap failures.
Rules: coverage and construction are typically compatible with many full-contact tournament checks (including HMB/IMCF and local formats), but final approval depends on the specific event and your full kit.
Historical basis: the shape follows historical sources and period analogs of plate/scale neck defenses, adapted for sporting durability and practical use.
